I’m a busy professional, and that means I am always on the go. When I go home, it can be challenging to unwind from my fast-paced life. As a result, when I try to relax and watch television or read a book, I am unable to. The day stays with me as I focus on the tasks completed, the tasks on the go, and the ones yet to be started. 

Relaxation is always tricky for me, as I feel as though I should be doing more. The difficulties started to affect my home life as I was unable to concentrate, unable to spend time with my family without letting my work life interfere. Then I began to read about Chamomile.

Chamomile has fantastic properties that can help me to relax. I found a quick cup of Chamomile tea every day at the end of my work period enabled me to relax at home. I started to focus more and enjoy time with my family again. On top of Chamomile tea, helping me to relax, there were other benefits I quickly began to notice as well.

Chamomile is one of the most ancient herbs used for natural health. The ancient Egyptians used the flowers in traditional medicine for their various beneficial properties. These daisy-like flowers come in two varieties, German and Roman Chamomile.

The most widely accepted usage of Chamomile is by brewing the flowers into a tea. However, there are also Chamomile essential oils, tincture, and tablets that you can take. People use Chamomile essential oils and teas for a variety of reasons.

As stated, consuming Chamomile daily has many wonderful effects.  However, as a busy professional, I wanted to know why? What makes Chamomile so helpful for someone like me? Many benefits come with using Chamomile on a day to day basis.

Chamomile tea has been suggested to reduce your blood sugar levels significantly. If you struggle with hyperglycemia or are diabetic, then there is research that shows that Chamomile tea may be good for you. 

If you want to bring your blood glucose levels down, then try drinking a cup of Chamomile tea after every meal.

Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease that makes your bones lose melatonin and keratin and causes them to weaken. Some studies suggest that drinking Chamomile tea may help to slow the progression of this debilitating illness.

Chamomile is a flower that grows naturally. Therefore, you can’t get it in foods unless it is in addition to other ingredients.

Some foods that Chamomile is added too are as follows.

  • Some chefs infuse ice-cream with Chamomile to achieve a more aromatic and fruity taste. 
  • You can buy Chamomile-Celery oil. Included in a variety of dishes, the oil is great for salad dressings and marinades.
  • Blending the flowers with oil or vinegar makes for a great, tasty addition to fish or scallops.
  • Some chefs also use the Chamomile flower in their baking. It can be added to cakes, tarts, and a variety of other desserts to add an aromatic and natural sweetness to them that is unique and flavorful.
  • Another great way to enjoy Chamomile is in various cocktails. The vodka, pepper and sage-laced drink called the Mad Hatter is one such cocktail that includes Chamomile.
  • You can also get Chamomile infused vodkas that have the aromatic flavor of this flower and make for a great blending drink.
  • Use dried Chamomile leaves with salt and use it to rub on fish or Lamb.
  • You can also get the flowers as a simple syrup that pairs well with a variety of foods and dishes.

If you are looking to get Chamomile naturally in foods, you have to find foods that are Chamomile infused. There are a few specialty products that you can buy with it. However, to get Chamomile in foods, it needs to be added.

Risks And Side Effects Of Chamomile

Like any supplement or herb that you take as a medication there are side effects you should be aware of before starting Chamomile. Additionally, there are also some risks and interactions that you should take note of before you begin taking Chamomile regularly.

Side Effects:

There is the possibility of those who are hypersensitive to have allergic reactions from Chamomile tea. These reactions can include redness, swelling of the skin, hives and in severe cases, anaphylactic shock. 

If you are pregnant, there is the possibility of Chamomile causing constrictions of small blood vessels that are important to a developing fetus.

There is the possibility of internal hemorrhaging, especially in older adults, very young, and those who have naturally thin blood.

Women who are breastfeeding may experience an increase in milk production. Additionally, there is also reports of breast tension.

Those who suffer seasonal allergies like hay fever may experience a runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes that are associated with allergies. These allergy reactions are especially important for those who inhale or come in contact with the dried leaves of the Chamomile flower.

Can cause drowsiness since it does have a component to it that helps with sleep and relaxation.

Too much Chamomile can cause you to experience vomiting.

  • Chamomile does interact with some drugs that some of you may consume regularly. Therefore, it is crucial that you know that Chamomile can interact with sedatives, blood thinners, aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and other NSAID painkillers, along with other drugs.
  • Chamomile can interfere with the effectiveness of anesthesia. Therefore, as stated above, be sure to stop taking Chamomile two weeks before any surgery.
  • There is also the possibility of Chamomile interacting with other natural supplements such as Ginkgo Biloba, garlic, St. John’s Wort, saw palmetto and valerian.
  • Chamomile is very mild, and it is generally alright to be taken by anyone, especially if you drink a cup of tea to unwind after a long day. Don’t let the side effects, risks, or interactions prevent you from benefiting from this flower. 

The possibility of you experiencing any negative effect is rare and uncommon. Therefore, if you are concerned at all,  consult your physician and get the go-ahead before you start drinking Chamomile tea.
